François Dumont was Queen Marie-Antoinette's favorite miniaturist. In this portrait we find all the beauty and freshness of Mrs. Elisabeth (1764-1794), dressed in a simple cream dress, a transparent scarf and wearing a rose bouquet tied to her corsage. We imagine her walking around the hamlet of Versailles, in her country outfit in company of the queen. All the finesse of Dumont's art is expressed through this work.
Princess Élisabeth of France, the youngest of Louis XVI's family, is distinguished by her lively character and deep devotion. Throughout her life, she demonstrated a profound attachment to her brother and sister-in-law, whom she faithfully accompanied to their tragic end.
Her loyalty to Louis XVI led her to refuse the exile chosen by her aunts, the daughters of Louis XV, known as 'Mesdames,' as well as by her other brothers. She remained by the side of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, accompanying them to Varennes, the Temple prison, and finally to the scaffold. In 1794, she was executed there before being buried in a mass grave.
